What was the reason for not including ability damage, per old editions?

@SethdeReus @mikemearlsWhat was the reason for not including ability damage, per old editions? Any obvious pitfalls to adding it in? Many numbers rely on your ability scores. Monkeying with those numbers in combat can be a bookkeeping nightmare.
