$ 0 0 being a dungeon master is absolutely crucial if you were one of the people who’s actually making DD that’s why I talked to Mike murrells and Jeremy Crawford about their home games and about some of their tips and tricks for Dungeon Master’s I think it has two rules first it just keeps us in touch with what our customers are doing so we kind of kind of see the game from that point of view and then that leads into the very useful thing is when we we use surveys to drive a lot of our understanding of what people are doing with the game but we have to know what questions to ask so by running the game in seeing first hand whether it’s a good thing or a that’s a bug or trouble spot it lets us frame the conversation going forward if we’re not playing we don’t know what to ask we don’t know where to go next right right it it I mean not only do we play it because we love it but also as mike says we have to do it because for us it means that D&D is never see a reticle it always remains a real game and we understand how playing it actually feels it’s not just sort of this thing we think about and I go this theoretical dnd could be improved by this thing no will sometimes walk in after an evening or a weekend dming the game and be like we really wanted to make this change or what if we did this would this make the game better or here’s this thing that was really annoying in the game or oh here’s a part of the game that was awesome let’s let’s make sure we amplify this going forward it means basically we’re always play testing our own game and always getting the kind of insight you can get about something only by using it yeah and it gets a big inspiration for potential future design like I’ve completely redesign initiative great for my campaign because I found Daniel too predictable i wouldn’t say more chaotic it’s a little more complicated but it adds a lot of chaos to a battle ring so that’s start using my game usually ends up being once or twice a month we play at home on the weekends yeah i play on monday nights after work but yeah it averages that once or twice month but we’ll play like six straight weeks that will go a month while playing you know conventions come up or work or you know things like that or I’m going out with my wife at night the gaming the typical thing degree and that’s actually useful too because it would lets us see how a lot of typical gaming groups work right you know rather if we played every single day it would probably actually give us a warped view of the game as most people can’t play every day or they just can’t get a group together to play every day yeah and then our home play is supplemented by the dming that we do at conventions so that we’re we’re not only experiencing what kind of a traditional home game feels like but then we also experienced what convention players like what is you know then also we are we experience what it’s like to play with our friends versus playing with people we’ve just met yeah so it’s always important for us to kind of to constantly expose ourselves to all these different ways of playing and dming D&D one of the things I always come back to when I’m preparing for a session and while I’m running it is how much I love is a DM to be surprised and where I go with that practically is I make sure I don’t over-prepare what’s always important for me is I prepare just enough that I always have the baseline needed to get the session started to keep it moving but then I’m ready to Zig when the players AG that when they do something crazy I’m ready for it because I’m not rigidly following my own preparation so for me it’s always much more thinking about my job as a DM of creating frameworks not laying the rail down for the train that they’re going to ride yeah I just basically I always make sure i have a tool set of enough very tools I can grab at a moment’s notice and use and not necessarily a you know a plot line that goes from step one to step 20 instead I’ll have a cluster of possibilities and the other biggie and this this I think helps a lot of dms once they embrace it is especially if I’m I’m doing a very character-driven style campaign I mean not only driven by the player characters but also driven by NPCs and villains is often the biggest part of my prep is just deciding what is the and what is the villain doing exactly and that will often do all my prep form exactly I’ll just decide all right this crime lord wants this because she wants this here are the things she is going to be doing in the upcoming session I’ll see how often the player characters intersect with her and then really the whole session is a sequence of things that surprised me just as much of the players and and rather than me sort of showing up with this plan and just unveiling go here is my master plan behold way more fun to just show up and lake loop I’ll find out at the end of the session what happened yeah I like being surprised yeah I favorite part of being under master yeah and embracing that the part of it is it just having the right mindset and I think one of things I always do I never act surprised no matter what players do I always active oh yeah I expected that well it was a flat that’s an important life lesson if you’re acting as if this is what you’re expected every wow this guy he was one step ahead of us fear I was watching this I think as a police officer and he’s talking about how in an investigation when he’s investing a crime he can make a bunch of mistakes but all it takes is one mistake by the suspect to lead to a conviction maybe that one clue when they say the one thing the wrong person that’s only needs and it’s a dungeon master you’re like that that cop all the players are seen to make one misstep and then you can like you got them right like you can screw up everything this matter because you’re the one who decides whether something’s a mistake or not you got someone’s name wrong oh no it’s actually this different guy right you forget something whatever it doesn’t matter you’re controlling everything the players see so you really kind of can’t screw up because you can always retro actively oh no I’m insane you’re right that is the wrong you know like yeah and just BS it because the place that but the players don’t care that’s what I have a fun time yeah so yeah because they’re experiencing it live i think sometimes DM is imagine the players are somehow going to gain access to my notes and realize it didn’t come out it didn’t play out the way I planned like no they they have no idea yeah they’re experiencing it as it unfolds and so I think dams are always happy when they just embrace going with that flow and listening that’s the other big piece of advice I often come back to four people just listen to your players outside the session when they say things related to what they like Indy Indy but also in the sessions so often making people enjoy d ideas as simple as noticing that player laughs and smiles every time i did this particular funny voice I’ll do that funny voice some more or this other person always just seems super excited everytime combat breaks out I’ll come to make sure I have a steady stream of battles for this persia and it’s just just paying attention and and giving them what they want because again since it’s it’s entertainment we can be shameless about giving people treats like we we don’t we don’t have to give them their vegetables that’s right like for me it’s like it’s fine infinity of like this is what they want like you want ice cream i’m going to give you four bowls of ice cream here cake yeah i’m not going to get away from this very right entertainment and the thing is is if you listen to all your players and pay attention to their reactions that in itself will create variety because everyone has slightly different tastes yeah what’s good stuff and so as you cater to your different players you don’t have to worry about things getting too monotonous because you just basically it’s like you prepare a buffet and you just keep serving it may be changing the order and what you’re serving up who does a little bit we are known yes there was a while where ya where are our one of our weekly lunches was always a buffet about getting that tray and i can add stuff i’m going up for second you feel like oz is life i can have whatever i was in the context of this booklet right thank you Mike murrells and Jeremy Crawford for being on the show this is dungeon life is a channel devoted to DD where we interview the creators of D&D we have community spotlights and we also have tips and tricks and a whole lot more this is all made possible by viewers like you and also our subscribers on patreon without you guys we cannot keep making these videos and what we use patreon for is not only funding for future video content and improving the quality of that content but also to form a community to give feedback from you guys to share early video links of interviews we’re working on and show behind-the-scenes footage and even show tutorials about how this show gets made in the first place we cannot do these without the amazing DMD community your comments and your messages have been so overwhelmingly positive thank you guys for watching thank you so much
